Benefits for Papermaker

3D Grinding with Hybrid GrindControl 3D - when you need round rolls for the production conditions

3D grinding compensates the roundness error created, for example, by the roll's own bearings during the grinding process. RollResearch is the only provider who can correct an error in MD direction. The error in CD direction can also be neutralized. Hybrid GrindControl 3D has shown its superiority at Myllykoski Paper. The geometry errors of rolls ground in a Waldrich grinding machine have decreased by 60 - 90%.

The goal is to make the rolls as round and equal in thickness as possible at a production speed.

The advantages of 3D Grinding includes the better runnability, paper quality and an extended lifetime of the rolls.

Better runnability

The fact is that a round roll rotates better. This causes less vibration, better runnability and a longer runtime.

Better paper quality

Cross direction. Slideway errors of a grinding machine have a poor influence on CD profiles. For example, influence from systematic errors in the slideway will, in a supercalender, be added and have thereby a very negative effect on the paper web profile.

Machine direction. For example an elastic transformation of a backing roll at a greater speed can be compensated. Experiences at Myllykoski Paper have indicated about 60 % decrease in a MD coating variation of a LWC-paper.

Lower maintenance costs

Extended lifetime of rolls: for example the soft rolls of supercalender at Myllykoski Paper run 20% longer than before installation of 3D Grinding machines. In this case it means over 250 000 EUR annual savings in maintenance costs.

Another great benefit is that the rolls can be ground on their own bearings. It saves time and eliminates a risk of an error in reassembling the bearings. The total handling time at the grinding machine has decreased by 30 - 50 % and the machining interval of 3D ground rolls has become significantly longer.
